New European Ombudsman

Emily O'Reilly was elected to serve as European Ombudsman. Previously she was the Ombudsman of Ireland. Her predecessor as the European Ombudsman was Nikiforos Diamandouros who served in this position since 2003.
The European Ombudsman is one of the subsidiary bodies of the European Union established by the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992. It investigates complaints about maladministration in the activities of the institutions, bodies, offices and agencies of the EU.
